Cartridge valve description
Hydraulic cartridge valves control the direction, flow, and pressure of the oil in the hydraulic system of a machine. Their compact size and flexibility make them an excellent choice for motion control applications on mobile equipment. Cartridge valves are screwed or flanged into a hydraulic manifold block to create a main control unit or Hydraulic Integrated Circuit . They offer low leakage, easy maintenance and multiple design options. Hydraulic control circuits using cartridge valves can be modified to handle more functions, higher or lower flows or pressure by simply updating the size or design of cartridges in the manifold. Automated electronic control can easily be added to solenoid or proportional cartridge valves by attaching a valve driver or wiring an electronic control unit to the coil.
Cartridge valve advantage
The cartridge valve, with nearly 30 years of successful applications experience, holds a unique position in the fluid power industry. Its small size, fast switching speeds, and cost effective design, make it an integral part of many motion control and fluid power systems.
Atmospherically vented counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio. Backpressure at port 2 does not affect the valve setting because the spring chamber is atmospherically referenced.
Cartridge Installation
Sun cartridge valves are manufactured from carbon steel with all external parts zinc plated to protect against corrosion. Critical internal working parts (sliding spool valves often have a clearance between fixed and working parts of 5 microns or less) are heat treated and precision ground or lapped, to ensure repeatable, reliable performance. Sun cartridge valves are available in five different sizes with capacities doubling from one size to the next. These cartridges can only be used in a Sun cavity that matches the external configuration of the cartridge. When installing cartridges in their cavities, they should be torqued to the recommended value. All cartridges have Buna-N seals as standard, with Viton optional. Buna-N seals have an operating range of -50° F to 200° F. Viton seals have an operating range of 0° F to 250° F.
